Visitor Engagement Associate: The Arts Center at Governors Island

Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) seeks Visitor Engagement Associates (VEAs) for The Arts Center at Governors Island, a multidisciplinary arts space developed, programmed and operated by LMCC. The Visitor Engagement Associates will staff gallery spaces, engage audiences and provide information to gallery visitors about the exhibitions, The Arts Center, LMCC, and answer questions and assist with public programming as needed. This position reports to the Public Engagement & Special Events Manager.

Ideal candidates for the role will have a passion for connecting and engaging with the public through art. Education, teaching, or gallery experience is a plus. The opportunity to craft and present guided tours of the space may also be available. Long periods of standing may be necessary.

VEAs will have the opportunity to participate in enrichment and professional development opportunities, such as talks with curators and artists, peer-to-peer knowledge sharing opportunities and discussions, etc.

This is a part-time, temporary position with flexible dates from May 2022 through October 2022. An orientation/walkthrough of the exhibitions will be scheduled for the week of May 20th. Public Hours for The Arts Center at Governors Island are as follows: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 12-6pm. In July and August we will be open later on Fridays and Saturdays until 7pm. Staff is expected on-site from 11:30am-6/7pm. The opportunity for additional hours to accommodate LMCC’s other programming and special events may also be available.

Please Note: The dates and working hours on this page reflect LMCC’s current programming plans as of March 2022. Due to the continually evolving circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and safety protocols in place in New York, LMCC may need to adjust the 2022 programming season, as necessary.

Responsibilities:

• Welcome guests and ensuring a safe, pleasant, inclusive, and informative experience
• Serve as point person for information about the Exhibitions, The Arts Center, LMCC’s full calendar of programming, as well as safety protocols within The Arts Center
• Replenish exhibition printed materials as necessary
• Assist visitors with digital ticket reservations on-site and check reservations at the entrance to the gallery space
• Track visitor count and maintain safe social distancing capacity in the space
• Ensure visitors understand and comply with the COVID-19 safety protocol and social distancing guidelines
• Assist with set-up, break-down, and facilitation of LMCC’s Take Care Series public programs
• Maintain general upkeep of the space, including minor cleaning and trash removal

Compensation: $18/hour on a contract basis.

Qualifications: Strong candidates for this position will have:

• A personable demeanor, comfortable with speaking to the public
• A passion for connecting and engaging with visitors and the general public
• An ability to problem solve and think on their feet
• Arts education, Museum education, gallery or teaching experience a plus, but not required
