Irish Arts Center (IAC) is a national and international home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds. Based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City (near the corner of West 51st Street and Eleventh Avenue), IAC presents, develops, supports, and promotes work from established and emerging artists, providing cultural experiences that are innovative, collaborative, diverse, authentic, and emotionally and intellectually transporting, meet the highest standards of excellence, and celebrate our common humanity in an environment of Irish hospitality. Founded in 1972, throughout our history the Center has also provided community education programs and access to the arts for adults and children of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

ABOUT THIS POSITION

IAC is seeking numerous part-time ushers to join the inaugural Front-of-House team for the New Irish Arts Center, opening in December. As the primary point of contact for our guests, ushers will play a vital role for ensuring a warm, welcoming, enjoyable, and safe experience for all audiences at all IAC events.
The ideal candidates will exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, perform well under pressure, and be creative, on-their-feet problem solvers.

Positions are part time with variable hours, depending upon programming and event operational needs. Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as venue schedule requires. In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Welcoming guests in a polite and friendly manner.
  • Checking and scanning tickets and directing or escorting guests to their seats.
  • Distributing programs, brochures, and other materials.
  • Informing guests about the location of the restrooms, refreshments, and exits.
  • Tending to guests’ comfort and assisting them with any questions or problems.
  • Assisting guests with disabilities or other impairments, as needed.
  • Monitoring the guests’ activity to ensure the safety of the event.
  • Enforcing event rules and relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Following all emergency protocols and guiding audience members to the exits in an orderly manner.
  • Other duties as assigned

Part-time, seasonal position starting December 1st. Pay is $15/hour.

  • Effective verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and communicate seating locations and directions.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers onsite.
  • Ability to treat all guests, staff, and clients in a respectful and inclusive manner.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Must be comfortable working in settings with low lighting.
  • Work in a performance space is a plus and love of the arts is a must.
