The purpose of this grant program is to distribute resources directly to communities that are working to document, recognize, and preserve historic sites that are important to Asian and Pacific Islander American history.

Two grant categories are available:

  • Designation and Planning Grants — up to $25,000 - For communities documenting and researching, developing preservation or interpretive plans, or preparing nominations to the National Register of Historic Places or state/local equivalents for buildings and sites important to Asian or Pacific Islander American history.
  • On-Site Preservation Grants — up to $100,000 - For communities pursuing physical preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or interpretive installations at historic sites important to Asian or Pacific Islander American history.

Requirements

Who can apply

Eligible applicants include 501©(3) nonprofits, units of local government, and fiscally sponsored projects based in the United States, Pacific Island territories, and Freely Associated States. The fund is open to organizations of all sizes, including those with limited grant-writing experience or limited access to traditional preservation funding.

What reviewers look for

Applications are reviewed on historic and cultural significance, project feasibility and readiness, public impact and community benefit, sustainability, and track record. The Grant Program Manual at apiahip.org/fund covers every review criterion and every question on the application form.
