Sapna is seeking a full-time Gender Justice Advocate to join our team. The Gender Justice Advocatewill work collaboratively with the Sapna NYC team and outside partners to support survivors of gender-based violence and break cycles of violence within the South Asian community. The large majority of this role is client facing, working with survivors as they leave situations of abuse and rebuild their lives. This position involves both direct client work as well as research, policy, and reporting components. This is a hybrid position and in addition to working in the office or at home, will also include work out in the community - conducting outreach, facilitating workshops, & meeting with the community. The ideal candidate is patient, outgoing, and empathetic, comfortable leading group conversations, and working one-on-one while addressing challenging and sensitive topics.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Gender Justice Advocate include but are not limited to:

Direct Client Work:

  • Conduct casework with survivors of gender-based violence assessing needs and supporting with short term and long-term goals
  • Assist survivors with reporting hate crimes, sexual assault, or abuse.
  • Manage referrals to legal and mental health services. Follow-up with survivors as needed and track outcomes.

Community education

  • Assist with and facilitate survivor workshops as needed
  • Work with Sapna NYC’s team to plan culturally attuned, in-language community workshops and conversations on topics related to gender justice.
  • Assist with community listening sessions, meetings, etc.to conduct issue-based research to refine anti-violence initiative context and direction based on community needs.

Research, Reporting, & Administration

  • Maintain records of all survivor related work through data collection and notetaking
  • Prepare documents, reports, and statistics for all appropriate program-related work.
  • Develop and maintain client files and complete required agency forms. Enter information into database as required.
  • Assist with reports and draft narratives for grant reporting
  • Work on research on survivor needs and experiences in the Bengali community
  • Research resources for survivors where app

Outreach, External Relationships, & Coalition Building

  • Develop and maintain relationships with law enforcement, city agencies, health providers, etc. regarding Sapna NYC’s GBV services in collaboration with management.
  • Conduct outreach and connect survivors to Sapna NYC GBV services.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, and workshops pertinent to anti-violence work.
  • Attend GBV coalition or partner organization meetings as needed
  • Attend GBV funder or agency meetings as needed
  • Actively participate in organizational planning for anti-hate initiatives with other Sapna NYC staff.
  • Assist with other community events and outreach as needed

Requirements

COMPENSATION:

Sapna NYC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with experience and within the parameters of the Sapna NYC compensation scale. This includes a generous PTO and sick leave package, paid family leave, professional development stipend as well as other benefits. This is a 35-hour full-time hourly position with compensation of $45,000 - $51,000 ($25-$28/hour) commensurate with experience. Sapna NYC’s office hours are Monday - Friday, 10am-6pm with some room for flexibility. Some evenings and weekends will be required. This position requires 2-3 days in-person at our offices in the Bronx with the remaining days remote.

  • Assist survivors with paperwork and compliance with open ACS or legal cases.
  • Work with Sapna’s case workers to provide assistance to Survivors navigating the Human Resource Administration (HRA) and other application documentation and application process.
  • Assist in organizing community workshops and events.
  • Plan and facilitate monthly survivor’s circle.
  • Pay: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
