The University of Virginia’s Department of Drama seeks applicants for the position of Scene Shop Supervisor: Technical Director. This twelve-month position oversees all activity relating to Scenic Production for both the academic calendar and the summer festival. The Scene Shop Supervisor: Technical Director is responsible for the planning and implementation of all scenic elements for staged productions in all Drama Department Theatres.

As the professional summer theatre at the University of Virginia, Virginia Theatre Festival presents an annual summer festival of musicals, classic works, and new plays for our local Charlottesville, Albemarle, and UVA communities. Founded in 1974, Virginia Theatre Festival remains the only professional summer theatre in the Charlottesville area and is a vital part of the arts landscape at the University of Virginia and throughout the local and regional community. The UVA Drama building is a state-of-the-art theatre complex, which includes the 450-seat Culbreth Theatre with proscenium stage, the flexible 160 to 200-seat Helms Theatre and, the 300-seat Ruth Caplin Theatre, a thrust theatre. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • The reviewing, budgeting, scheduling, staffing, drafting, construction, installation, storing, and striking of all theatrical productions being put on by the Drama Department and the summer festival.
  • In collaboration with and under the supervision of the Head of Scenic Production, determine the best way to construct, rig, and install stage scenery in order to realize scenic designs for simultaneous productions.
  • Supervise student workers and ensure compliance with all safety requirements.
  • On occasion, train, instruct, and supervise students completing laboratory practice as stage technicians on run crew, including standard methods and operations of the theater machinery and rigging, gripping of scenery, and duties associated with technical support for live theater including standards of professional conduct.

Qualifications include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and four years’ experience in non-licensed trade discipline and two years supervisory and leadership experience (required).
  • Experience in scenic construction in theatre production preferred.
  • Experience in AutoCad, Vectorworks, Automated CNC machines, 3D printing, Automated Fly Systems, Automated Deck Winch Systems, and advanced construction techniques preferred.
  • Working knowledge of theatre relevant building codes, OSHA, Fire Marshall, etc. and quickly become familiar with University policies and procedures.

Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
