The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is proud to announce an Arts Career Training Program, which will offer a part-time paid year-long fellowship opportunity in NYFA’s Learning department to an individual interested in pursuing a career in arts administration. Supported by the Regional Economic Development Council and the New York State Council on the Arts, the program was created in an effort to provide early career training opportunities to individuals from historically underrepresented communities in the arts and cultural sector. People of color, LGBTQ, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The mission of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is to empower working artists and arts organizations across all disciplines at critical stages in their creative lives and professional/organizational development. We do this through four core programs: Learning, Online Resources, Fiscal Sponsorship, and Awards and Grants. Each year, NYFA awards over $1.5 million in artist fellowships and funding; our Fiscal Sponsorship program helps to raise and manage an average of $3.5 million for artists and organizations nationwide; our Learning programs provide thousands of artists with professional development training and support; NYFA’s website is used by nearly 1 million people, and features over 20,000 opportunities and resources available to artists in all disciplines.

NYFA Learning Overview:

NYFA Learning provides artists and arts administrators from all disciplines with a variety of programming in New York State, the U.S., and internationally. We serve as the organization’s front-line of professional development; from facilitating one-on-one consultations with industry professionals, and creating online webinars, to conducting intensive programs that focus on providing entrepreneurial training and community specific support. For more information, please visit NYFA Learning program page. A primary focus of the program is administering the Immigrant Artist Program (IAP), which offers support to immigrant artists, through access to information, resources, and mentoring programs. For more information, please visit the Immigrant Artist Program page.

The fellowship will be for a full year. The Learning Fellow will be required to work 20 hours a week at our offices in Brooklyn, NY, between our regular office hours of 9:30am and 5:30pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening/weekend meetings. The fellow will work alongside a team of three full-time staff, and one part-time, and will attend all related department meetings. They will work closely with department members gaining key insights into arts administration.

In addition to the training and mentoring they will receive over the course of the year, the participant will also become involved with the overall life of the organization, gaining a greater understanding of a nonprofit office. The Learning Fellow will be invited to participate fully in NYFA’s daily activities, and in our staff led voluntary Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Work Group meetings and all related trainings. This opportunity will provide one emerging arts administrator with dedicated, professional job training that will prepare them for a full time position in the cultural sector.

Educational activities will include:

- defining career goals for the duration of the fellowship, with regular check-ins to ensure access to opportunities and mentorship to help achieve identified milestones.
- researching resources for dissemination with NYFA’s constituents;
- learning the processes of administering professional development programs, from inception to implementation; assisting in outreach, preparation, and general administration;
- becoming informed in strategies for fostering program alumni and audience engagement, including drafting responses to email inquiries and contributing to programmatic newsletters; opportunities to conduct interviews with NYFA affiliated artists;
- gaining a deeper understanding of the resources available to artists and arts organizations, particularly for underrepresented and underserved communities.

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is an Equal Opportunity Employer with a commitment to supporting a more equitable arts sector. Our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion are critical to our mission to serve all artists. Individuals of diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. NYFA’s offices are accessible.
