The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is proud to announce an Arts Career Training Program, which will offer a part-time paid year-long fellowship opportunity in NYFA’s Development department to an individual interested in pursuing a career in arts administration. Supported by the Regional Economic Development Council and the New York State Council on the Arts, the program was created in an effort to provide early career training opportunities to individuals from historically underrepresented communities in the arts and cultural sector. People of color, LGBTQ, and people with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.

The mission of the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is to empower working artists and emerging arts organizations across all disciplines at critical stages in their creative lives and professional/organizational development. We do this through four core programs: Learning, Online Resources, Fiscal Sponsorship, and Awards and Grants. Each year, NYFA awards over $1.5 million in artist fellowships and funding; our Fiscal Sponsorship program helps to raise and manage an average of $3.5 million for artists and organizations nationwide; our Learning programs provide thousands of artists with professional development training and support; NYFA’s website is used by nearly 1 million people, and features over 20,000 opportunities and resources available to artists in all disciplines.

The fellowship will run from March 1, 2020 to February 26, 2021. The Development Fellow will be required to work 20 hours a week at our offices in Brooklyn, NY, between our regular office hours of 9:30am and 5:30pm, Monday through Friday. The fellow will work alongside a team of three full-time staff, and will attend all related department meetings. Educational activities will include:

• defining career goals for the duration of the fellowship, with regular check-ins to ensure access to opportunities and mentorship to help achieve identified milestones;
• assisting with event coordination, including NYFA’s annual Spring Benefit, and events for major donors and young professionals;
• learning about grant writing processes, including drafting LOIs and proposals, and producing acknowledgement letters and other donor communications;
• gaining an understanding of how to maintain accurate donor records, and assisting in the implementation of NYFA’s new database system;
• learning about the various strategies for seeking funding, and providing support for NYFA’s annual appeal;
• providing support in the implementation of new membership programs;
• collaborating with the development team to brainstorm and implement ideas to cultivate, support, and steward new and existing donors; and
• learning and engaging with the tools used for researching grant support, and the information and insight necessary to identifying and securing new funding opportunities.

The Development Fellow will be invited to participate fully in NYFA’s daily activities, and in our staff led voluntary Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Work Group meetings and all related trainings.

The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is an Equal Opportunity Employer with a commitment to supporting a more equitable arts sector. Our values of equity, diversity, and inclusion are critical to our mission to serve all artists. Individuals of diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. NYFA’s offices are accessible.
