The Foundwork Artist Prize is an annual juried award that we started in 2019 to recognize outstanding emerging and mid-career artists working in any media. Honorees receive unrestricted $10,000 grants and studio visits with our jurors who include distinguished curators, gallerists, and artists. Honorees and shortlisted artists are also invited for interviews as part of their Dialogues program to further public engagement with their practices. The Prize is open to artists residing anywhere in the world with limited exceptions, and their annual selection process takes place each fall. For instructions on eligibility and how to participate, please see the “Foundwork Artist Prize” section in the FAQ.

Requirements

The 2023 Foundwork Artist Prize is open to artists residing in any location worldwide, except for a few countries, states, and provinces listed below. Artists working in any media are eligible.

In addition, in order to be eligible, an artist must:

(1) be an individual who is at least eighteen years old and otherwise able to enter into a binding contract;
(2) not be a Foundwork employee, contractor, or their relative;
(3) be able to use Foundwork and participate in the Prize in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, and regulations; and
(4) have a published artist profile on Foundwork, with at least 6 artworks and an artist statement published on their profile page, continuously throughout the selection period: 5:00 pm PT, September 26–5:00 pm PT, December 31, 2023.

Artists who meet the above eligibility criteria will be considered equally whether an artist has a paid account or is in a free trial period. Artists are otherwise eligible regardless of age, race, creed, color, religion, country of origin, gender, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, ancestry, disability, or veteran status.

Please note that residents of the following countries, states, and provinces are not eligible for the Foundwork Artist Prize: Argentina; Arizona (US State); Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bulgaria; Cuba; Iran; Kosovo; Latvia; Macedonia; North Korea; Quebec (Canadian Province); Russia; Saudi Arabia; Serbia; Sudan; Syria; and United Arab Emirates (UAE). These geographic restrictions are for regulatory reasons beyond our control and we appreciate your understanding.

Please also note the following restrictions for artists who have been honorees or shortlisted artists in past years: (1) an artist who has been an honoree in any past year will not be eligible to be an honoree or shortlisted artist again in any other year; and (2) an artist who has been a shortlisted artist in any past year will not be eligible to be an honoree or shortlisted artist again in any of the three years after the year they were last chosen as a shortlisted artist (for example, if an artist is a shortlisted artist in 2020, they will not be eligible again until 2024). We include these restrictions in order to recognize a wider range of artists from year to year and we appreciate your understanding.
