Towson University’s Department of Theatre Arts is accepting applications for a Director of Lighting/Assistant Technical Director. This individual will execute the lighting needs and support scenic, sound, projection, and technical aspects of all faculty, guest artist, and both undergraduate and graduate department productions. The training and supervision of students is also central to this position. This individual will report to the chair and work closely with the Technical Director and Lighting Designer. This is a twelve-month appointment.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Implement all lighting needs for four performance venues and other spaces as needed.
  • Assume full responsibility for completion of associated tasks on time and under budget.
  • Support all technical aspects of production in collaboration with other members of the production team. Examples include the building of scenic elements and special effects, the installation set-up of sound and projection technology, and other technical elements required for rehearsals and performances.
  • Train students on the proper and safe handling and use of lighting, projection, sound, scenic equipment and software, and work with students to ensure completion of assigned tasks.
  • Serve as the on-call technical supervisor for all departmental productions. (Nights and weekends required).
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs of lighting and other technical and shop equipment to keep all in good working order.
  • Participate in safety training and perform tasks with an understanding of safety regulations and potential hazards.
  • Attend all technical and dress rehearsals as well as production and department meetings.
  • Model professionalism and collegiality for students.

Requirements

Qualifications and Skills

Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or related field.
- At least 3 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of industry standards and safe practices. (OSHA 10 or willing to get
certification within six months of employment.)
- An Ideal candidate will share the department’s outlook of a student-centered community
that practices kindness and collaboration, and engages in department’s ongoing
commitment to create an equitable and inclusive environment.
- Knowledge of basic electrical theory and ability to program, maintain, and install and
maintain complex lighting systems, such as ETC systems, Intelligent Lighting, and
Networking protocols.
- Proficiency with CAD Drafting (both VectorWorks and AutoCAD preferred) and v
LightWright

Preferred skills:
- Rigging
- Welding
- Motion Control, Conners System preferred
- CNC
- Knowledge of sound and projection equipment
Candidate who does not enter with preferred skills will be expected to develop them within the first six months of employment.
