Founded in 1973 as Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, LMCC serves, connects, and makes space for artists and community. LMCC seeks a permanent full-time Director of Cultural Programs. The Director of Cultural Programs contributes to the creative direction and strategy of LMCC cultural programs while overseeing its administration, coordination, and execution. The Director of Cultural Programs stewards the integration of all public-facing cultural programs in alignment with the organization’s mission.

Responsibilities include:

• Works closely with the Executive Director, Artistic Programs on the design, administration, and implementation of LMCC’s cultural programs
• Shapes the creative direction of all visual arts programs, including but not limited to exhibitions and public engagement programming of the Arts Center at Governors Island.
• Designs year-round calendar of programming and space-use across the Arts Center at Governors Island.
• Supports the presentation and implementation of River To River Festival as well as special cultural presentations and public projects in Lower Manhattan.
• Creates relevant curatorial and/or project-based contract teams, and acts as the project manager to ensure successful program implementation and effective communications between project / curatorial teams
• Works closely with LMCC leadership and members of the senior staff; represents LMCC in external partnerships on a regular basis.
• Works with the Institutional Advancement team on fundraising, partnerships, and marketing initiatives around all aspects of the cultural programs, including participation in planning meetings to set fundraising objectives and marketing strategy, including partnerships, press, web-based and printed materials
• Ensures that the activities and programs of the department support both development and presentation of artists in conjunction with local audience and community needs
• Develops key performance indicators for programs, to be used in internal and external reporting, as well as program development
• Identifies target audiences for cultural programs and contributes to outreach and accessibility planning to ensure inclusive public engagement
• Actively researches and evaluates new opportunities for programming and fields inquiries and requests from prospective artists, partners, and colleagues in the field
• Builds and oversees partnerships with local, national, and international entities
• Works inter-departmentally to identify programmatic intersections among Artist Services programs and partnership projects to maximize program impact for the organization’s constituency and respond to the ever-changing conditions for artistic production and consumption in New York City
• Works closely with LMCC leadership and Institutional Advancement team to anticipate funding, sponsorship, and in-kind opportunities and to pursue diverse sources of funding by generating copy and work samples for funder proposals and reports as needed
• Integrates departmental activities into the organization’s strategic mission by setting goals that align with the mission and monitoring progress towards these goals
• Works closely with leadership to establish the department’s budget; ensures the department operates within established financial guidelines and serves as the department’s financial liaison with the Finance & Admin Department
• Assures appropriate staffing to support department
• Promotes employee satisfaction and takes necessary action to maintain a productive and motivated staff
• Communicates effectively and efficiently with all staff concerning relevant matters

The Director of Cultural Program reports to the Executive Leadership and supervises a Program Manager and a Program Associate.

Requirements

Qualifications: Strong candidates for this position will have:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Art History, Arts Administration, Visual or Performing Arts disciplines or related fields
• Masters Degree in related fields preferred
• 7 years’ experience in the field; minimum of 3 years of supervisor experience
• Knowledge of contemporary visual, performing, and literary arts communities in NYC including curators, presenters, and other residency programs.
• Ability to produce visual and performing arts projects in unconventional spaces.
• Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills.
• Ability to be graceful and diplomatic in maintaining various business relationships.
• Proficiency using Apple computers and with applications such as Adobe Creative Suite programs, Submittable, Salesforce and Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
