For the second year Culture Push is excited to offer our Climate Justice Fellowship, with a focus on advocacy. This year we ask applicants to propose actions or critiques that speak to Environmental Racism and Climate Justice in direct relation to New York City’s shorelines and waterways. (Please look at these links to get a sense of what is included in “climate justice” and “environmental racism.”) As with each of our Fellowships the Climate Justice Fellow will be supported for a full year with communal resources, consultation, project development, access to our online publication, online tools, social media, institutional representation, and a stipend of $1500. Any proposals should keep community and problem-solving common human problems through hands-on civic participation and imagination at the forefront. We are excited to see what we will receive, with calls to action for this present moment.

The Climate Justice Fellowship is part of an ongoing collaboration with Works on Water and the New York City Department of City Planning. For this year’s Climate Justice Fellowship, we are focusing on advocacy, in relationship to the issues and recommendations in the New York City Department of City Planning’s upcoming Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, which seeks to connect residents with the city’s coastal edge. We are defining advocacy as creating visibility for the issues that affect your community as a way to address ongoing problems. Some questions to ask might be: What waterfront issues are facing your community? How do you want to address the ongoing water justice issues that affect your neighborhood? To figure out how your ideas might connect to the upcoming Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, please check out this Draft Framework for an overview of the issues, and also the previous Comprehensive Waterfront Plan, Vision 2020.
