Centro Cultural Casa Hechale is a cultural centre for theatre, film and performance in Santa María la Ribera, Mexico City. Its International Artist Residency provides two- or four-week periods for artists to live, work and develop new or existing projects through research, writing, rehearsal and experimentation.

The programme welcomes individual artists, duos and small collaborative teams working in theatre and live performance, acting and directing, playwriting, screenwriting and dramaturgy, dance and choreography, stage and costume design, film, moving image, sound, visual art and interdisciplinary practice. Applications are open worldwide and considered at all career stages.

Residents receive accommodation, scheduled access to the Black Box Theatre, rehearsal and reading rooms, Salon CHÁ and the Front Gallery, programme orientation and coordination, two individual project and advisory sessions per week, selected cultural activities, relevant introductions within Mexico City, and participation in an informal Open House. A completed work or public presentation is not required.

The programme is operated by Hechale Productions LLC, a California-registered performing arts company, through an AAPI- and Chicano-led cross-border team working between Mexico and the United States.

Two-week fees are US$1,300 for a shared room and US$1,900 for a private room. Four-week fees are US$2,100 shared and US$2,800 private. Four-week applicants may be considered for scholarships of up to US$700. Eligible Latin American artists may receive an additional award of up to US$500. There is no application fee.

Requirements

Open to individual artists, duos and small collaborative teams working in theatre, film, performance and related interdisciplinary fields. Applicants may be at any career stage and may apply from any country.

Applicants must be able to work in English or Spanish; fluency in both languages is not required. Any needs involving additional collaborators, specialized equipment, technical personnel or production support must be identified in the application.

There is no application or submission fee. Applications for the Winter 2026/27 cycle must be received by October 30, 2026.

Applications are reviewed by the Casa Hechale artistic team, with input from invited advisers where appropriate. Selection is based on the artistic direction of the proposal, the applicant’s practice, the purpose of the residency, its relationship to Casa Hechale and Mexico City, and the feasibility of the proposed activities.

Applicants seeking financial support should indicate this in the application. Scholarships are available only for four-week residencies. Selected artists will receive the residency offer, applicable scholarship information and confirmation procedures in writing.
