ECHO CHAMBER

Sonic Experience
Date: Wednesday, April 23, 2025
Time: 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM
Location: 42nd St–Bryant Park & 5th Ave Subway Corridor (BDFM & 7 lines)

We are always in the present and never resting upon a fixed point.
Yet, most of time, we forget that we are in the present. So what does it mean to experience the present?
This cannot be explained through words or captured in photographs—the moment it is framed, it is not the present.

This work refuses to leave visual information.
The present (the work) emerges and disappears only by passing through the performance itself. It exists solely in that time and space, in that moment, in that place, through the body. It does not leave any trace.

In a passageway BUSY with commuters, 70 performers stand along the walls, chanting sounds. Vowel tones echo through the space, transforming this transitory rush-hour corridor into an Echo Chamber.

About the Project:
We are looking for 70 individuals to participate in a site-specific, experimental sonic experience in one of New York’s busiest subway corridors during the morning rush hour. This performance is an extension of my previous work, Passage Piece (https://daiasano.com/passage-piece-2), and will involve a dynamic soundscape created by participants’ vocal chanting.

The performance will have no fixed score—performers will use vowel sounds freely, responding to each other and the environment as commuters pass through the space. This immersive experience will shift the perception of the daily rush, inviting participants to engage with the present.

About the Artist:
Dai Asano (b. 1996, Japan) is an artist based in New York. After studying business and working in corporate Japan, he left this path to pursue Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he developed a practice focused on blurring the boundary between life and art. Although his background is in photography, his work centers around time not as something to capture but as something to experience. Through interventions in everyday life, especially in the urban landscape, Asano creates participatory, ephemeral experiences that engage with the present. He received an MFA in Photography from RISD and a BA in Business from Keio University.
