The Art Omi: Architecture residency program is first of its kind in the nation, inviting 10 early- to mid-career architects from around the world to develop their work during a full two-week residency on Art Omi’s campus. Architecture Residents are selected on the basis of their individual proposed project and portfolio. Completed projects are presented in an informal critique setting at the end of the residency period, with visitors invited to see the proceedings.

Each year a distinguished Architecture Critic is invited to visit and meet with the residents during the last weekend of the residency and will lead the final presentations where the public can observe this key aspect in the process of making architecture.

Accomodations & Facilities
Architecture residents receive individual accommodations and dedicated desk space within the campus. Art Omi is located two and a half hours north of New York City in the scenic Hudson River Valley’s Columbia County. Named for a neighboring village, the hamlet of Omi is close to the small town of Ghent, NY, as well as Albany, Chatham, and Hudson, NY, which offers train connections less than thirty minutes away (we can provide transportation to and from the Hudson, NY train station).

The facilities, situated on three hundred acres of open land, include include sixty acres dedicated to The Sculpture and Architecture Park and the Benenson Center & Café. A large two-story barn, plus contemporary residence buildings designed with a vernacular reference to local farm structures, all surrounded by abundant perennial beds and expansive lawns dotted with fruit trees, completes the campus.

Ledig House, a Federal Period estate house serves as a gathering center for residents, providing a full kitchen, library and laundry facilities. The front porch overlooks rolling hills and the majestic outline of the Catskill Range. A swimming pool, bicycles, WiFi access and several computers are available on the premises. Chef-prepared dinner is served daily for communal meals, and a fully stocked kitchen provides plentiful food for lunch, breakfasts and snacks.

Columbia County, and the nearby Berkshire Mountains, are popular destinations because of their historical, natural and cultural riches. From bird sanctuaries to summer performance festivals, presidential mansions to farmer’s markets, the environs offer a singular blend of bucolic quiet and cultural stimulation. Staff and friends in the vicinity are often available for excursions of interest to residents.

Requirements

Applicants must submit and describe a project they wish to work on, on their own, while at Art Omi. Projects may be conceptual or practical, and may be an on-going or existing project that requires completion or a new design scheme to be initiated and completed by the end of the residency. Projects may not be client based nor directed. In all instances a visual presentation and a final work product is required. This may be in the form of drawings, maquettes, collages, digital images and the like. Written manuscripts and essays are not to be worked on nor initiated while at Art Omi. Each resident is expected to bring their own design tools, with some limited printing and up to $50 allowance for materials provided.

Application is open to architects from any part of the world that have been professionally active for at least the past six (6) years since professional licensing or obtaining an M. Arch. degree in the U.S. or internationally. Applications will be accepted from early and mid-career architects in active practice or in academia with an architectural design teaching concentration. We do not accept applications from students currently enrolled in any B. Arch, M. Arch, or PhD program. Please note: having a Master’s degree in Architecture and/or an architectural license IS a requirement. Space is very limited and a diverse and international group is sought, consistent with all Omi Residency programs and aligning with the mission of the Art Omi: Architecture program.

All completed applications adhering to the submission requirements will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of professionals. Among the jurors will be practicing architects, architects in academia, and architecture curators.
