Against the Grain: A Choreographers’ Convening is a FREE one-day gathering for NYC choreographers and movement-based artists to imagine new ways of building a more connected, generous, and liberatory arts ecosystem.
Convening around an evolving set of shared values, the day will include group discussions, an intergenerational artist panel, a movement workshop, and a generative resource-building session.
The convening will be facilitated by Audrey Thao Berger and ankita sharma, with guest artists Eiko Otake, Yara Travieso, Symara Sarai, and Anh Vo.
Participation is free, but a short application is required.

Requirements
Who Should Apply
This convening is for:
- Socially-engaged movement-based artists based in the NYC Metro Area
- Artists who have been creating (rather than solely interpreting) movement-based work professionally for at least three years.
They are especially interested in artists who:
- Those who identify as BIPOC, trans, queer, disabled, and/or members of other historically underrepresented, global majority communities within the Western movement-arts landscape
- Those whose work directly challenges the status quo by questioning dominant ideologies

This application is not merit-based. They are looking for artists whose practices align with the convening’s shared values and who have enough experience and perspective to contribute to the discussion. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by Friday, September 4.
