"This Tastes Like Home": Food, Fetish & Reclaiming Our Cultural Power
4 – 5PM
See a special sneak preview screening of ‘Untitled Durian Film,’ a short documentary in-progress that explores taste, power, and capitalism through the import of the world’s most polarizing fruit: the durian.
‘Untitled Durian Film,’ digs into the complex relationship between traditional Asian food, cultural identity, and capital. After the screening, stick around for a conversation with director Ash Goh and producer Sanjna Selva about how foods from our cultures get commodified, fetishized, and misunderstood—and what it all means for the people who’ve been eating them for generations.
This is a virtual hangout on Google Meet, and the best part comes at the end: we want to hear YOUR favorite food stories. There will be a collaborative board where you can draw, write, or record stories about foods from your own culture—especially the ones that are polarizing, unfamiliar to others, or carry weight that’s hard to explain. Whether it’s a dish your family swears by that makes your friends squeamish, or something that’s recently been “discovered” and repackaged, we want to create space to share these experiences together. Free to attend, just RSVP to save your spot!
