Virtual Documentary Night is a monthly online event hosted by Community Documentary Night. It is designed to give people the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on a wide range of topics with people from various backgrounds. This event is in collaboration with the Emory Asian Pacific Islander Desi American Activists (Emory APIDAA), the KSU Asian Studies Association (ASA), the Asian American & Asian Diaspora Studies Initiative at Emory University (AAADS), the MSU Asian Pacific American Graduate Alliance (MSU APAGA), and Asian American Voices for Education (AAVEd). Emory APIDAA is a student led organization based at Emory University dedicated to engaging Asian American-Pacific Islander social justice activism with academia. KSU ASA is a student led organization at Kennesaw State University, whose mission is to create a healthy, educational, and safe environment for those who share a common interest in Asian cultures. AAADS is the intellectual hub at Emory University for faculty members, graduate students, and library staff whose research focuses on Asian Americans and the Asian diaspora in the Americas. MSU APAGA provides representation and advocacy to the APIDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, Desi American) grad students at Michigan State University. AAVEd is a Georgia based nonprofit made up of a grassroots group of parents, community members and educators committed to advocating for comprehensive US history to be taught in Georgia K-12 schools.
For this Special Virtual Documentary Night, in honor of Women’s History Month, we are meeting to talk about the documentary, Nobuko Miyamoto: A Song in Movement. A documentary following the life of visionary musician, dancer and activist Nobuko Miyamoto. Featuring rare archival footage, the film tells the story of a changing community through one of its most beloved storytellers as she reflects on decades of groundbreaking cultural work and a life that has bridged coasts, industries, families and history. Quyên Nguyen-Le and Nobuko Miyamoto will be joining us for a special guest Q&A!
