Kinan Azmeh & Kevork Mourad: Home Within

A sixty-minute audio-visual performance, Home Within is the latest project of Syrian composer and clarinetist, Kinan Azmeh, and Syrian-Armenian visual artist, Kevork Mourad. In this work, art and music develop in counterpoint to each other, creating an impressionistic reflection on the Syrian revolution and its aftermath.

Home Within has been touring North America and Europe to raise awareness and funds for Syrian refugees.

About the Artists:

A graduate of the Juilliard School and the Damascus High Institute of Music,Kinan Azmehhas appeared worldwide as a soloist, composer and improvisor with Opera Bastille (Paris); Tchaikovsky Grand Hall (Moscow); Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the United Nations General Assembly (New York); the Royal Albert Hall (London); Teatro Colon (Buenos Aires); der Philharmonie (Berlin); the Libarary of Congress and the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC); the Mozarteum (Salzburg); and the Damascus Opera House at its inaugural concert in his native Syria. Kinan Azmeh was the first Arab to win the premier prize at the 1997 Nicolai Rubinstein International Competition in Moscow.

Kevork Mouradwas born in 1970 in Kamechli, a town in the upperreaches of Syria. Of Armenian origin, he received his MFA from the Yerevan Institute of Fine Arts in Armenia, and currently lives and works in New York as a visual artist.

Through his technique of spontaneous painting, where he shares the stage with musicians, Kevork has worked with a number of world class musicians. He is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and has performed widely in the United States and abroad, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Chelsea Museum of Art, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Chess Festival of Mexico City, the Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art (Yerevan), Le Festival du Monde Arabe (Montreal), Lincoln Center Atrium, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Nara Museum (Japan).

He held a recent exhibition at Galerie Claude Lemand (Paris) as well as the Art Paris Art Fair in 2015. Other solo exhibitions include the Contemporary Art Platform in Kuwait, he Courtyard Gallery in Dubai, JK Gallery in Los Angeles, as well as at the Rafia Gallery in Damascus. He also participated in Art Moment 2014, in Budapest, Hungary, with an exhibition and live painting. His digital piece,The Map of Future Movements, toured as part of a group exhibition in Jerusalem and Ramallah, and was in the 2010 Liverpool Biennial.
