KARAVIKA is a NYC based chamber ensemble, exploring the classical music of India, the folk music of the Americas, and the chamber music sensibilities of Western Classical music. Violinist, Trina Basu and cellist, Amali Premawardhana are joined by bassist Perry Wortman and collaborate with various Indian classical percussionists to form their core quartet. They were recently praised by the New York Times as “a soulful blend of classical and folk traditions from the United Stated and India”. Their 2012 debut, “Sunrise” featuring collaborative arrangements of old film and folk music from South Asia, was described by All About Jazz as “a liquid and organic brew that sounds inevitable, as if it’s existed forever…A dynamic sonic blend of uncommon mesmeric beauty.” Karavika launched an Indiegogo campaign in June 2015 to fully fund their new album “Of Earth and Sky”. Thanks to the generosity of fans, friends and brand new followers, they exceeded their goal before the end of the campaign. The album is an exploration of the various musical influences Karavika has come to embody - old and new, east and west. It’s a collection of songs all dancing around various manifestations of love, largely inspired by family and motherhood. Karavika celebrates the release of their second album “Of Earth and Sky” featuring some of their favorite collaborators including Carnatic violinist, Arun Ramamurthy, tabla player Avi Shah, Carnatic vocalist Roopa Mahadevan and others.
