CURATORIAL STATEMENT

“What if this is the moment?
What if this is the time?”

“Scenes of Becoming” transforms the exhibition space into a film set and each artwork into a scene from an unwritten life. Moving between memory and imagination, the works explore the uncertain, often invisible moments in which a life begins to change direction.
Huey-Min Chuang draws from a life shaped by movement across countries, languages, and cultures. Her figures inhabit spaces of waiting, remembering, dreaming, confronting, celebrating, and becoming. They are not presented as fixed identities, but as people in motion—between what was, what might have been, and what is still possible.

The exhibition unfolds like a film without a predetermined ending. We enter somewhere in the middle. What happened before remains partially concealed; what comes next has yet to be written.

The missing scenes belong to us.

At its center is a question about courage: the courage to imagine another life, to rise after uncertainty, to speak what has remained unspoken, and to begin again.

The exhibition culminates in Now or Never, an original song by Chuang that extends the visual narrative into sound. Its recurring question—whether this might be the moment—shifts the story from the artist’s experience to the viewer’s own.
Perhaps the answer is not something to find.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Huey-Min Chuang is a Taiwanese American multidisciplinary artist and storyteller whose practice encompasses drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, found materials, and original music. Self-taught, she began her artistic practice at 48 during the pandemic and has since developed an expanding body of work exploring memory, migration, belonging, imagination, resilience, and transformation.
Born in Taiwan and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Chuang later studied and lived in Germany and Spain before establishing her life and artistic practice in the United States. Her cross-cultural experience informs a practice concerned with how identity is carried, remembered, reimagined, and transformed across places and generations.

Chuang has presented solo exhibitions with Harlem ArtCrawl, Voelker Orth Museum, the Taiwanese American Arts Council, and XiaZhuTing Historical Museum, as well as exhibitions and presentations at Marin Museum of Contemporary Art (MarinMOCA), Trolley Barn Gallery, Queensborough Community College Gallery, Hualien Stone Sculpture Museum, Hsin Chu Glass Museum, and Governors Island, among other venues. Her exhibition history also includes participation in the 6th Louisiana Biennial.

Her work is included in the White Columns Artist Registry. She has participated in artist residencies and public programs with the Taiwanese American Arts Council and Forest for Trees on Governors Island, and was selected as an Artist in Action at the Smithsonian-affiliated Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Maryland.

Her artistic journey and work have been featured in Forbes, US News & World Report, World Journal, Radio Taiwan International, and The Epoch Times, among other media outlets.

Chuang’s practice continues to expand across visual art, writing, and songwriting, using each medium as a different way of asking how a life is remembered, imagined, and remade—and what becomes possible when we choose to begin.
