In this Open Rehearsal, composer Midori Larsen will share the behind-the-scenes of her new work for a chamber ensemble. The audience will experience part of the creative process as she asks the musicians to explore various playing techniques and expressions. Midori Larsen’s “Crossing the Seas” is inspired by the two migration journeys–her grandmother’s and her own. Written for Japanese and Western musical instruments, “Crossing the Seas” seeks to connect the two traditions and integrate her two musical identities, inviting her audience to celebrate their own unique backgrounds. The event is sponsored in part by City Artist Corps Grant from New York Foundation For The Arts (NYFA) and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA)

Composer, pianist, and taiko player Midori Larsen writes music for chamber ensembles featuring Japanese and Western musical instruments and elements. Her music explores her sense of self and life purpose as a Japanese immigrant woman artist in New York City. Her recent works include Yukiwatari, a multi-movement piece for shinobue, piano, taiko and percussion, accompanying the original story by Kenji Miyazawa. Midori is a recipient of 2021 Queens Arts Fund from Queens Council on the Arts and was an Artist-in-Residence for Asian American Arts Alliance in Winter 2020-2021.
