In a unique combination of traditional Japanese taiko drums and Western musical instruments, Midori Larsen, a Japanese immigrant woman composer, invites you to experience her compositions influenced by classical, jazz, and Japanese music.

“Crossing the Seas” is a series of original chamber music featuring woodwind, piano, guitar, bass, percussion, and taiko drums, inspired by migration stories of her own and other Japanese immigrant mothers.
Newly arranged for a sextet, her original trio versions return to Culture Lab LIC with a more vibrant ensemble. New addition to the series is her work based on other Japanese immigrant mothers’ empowering stories. Midori interviewed 4 other women residing in Queens, NY, about their migration stories, motherhood, and life vision, and will share their messages through her instrumental music accompanied by aesthetically crafted video projection.

Performers:
Ben Kono (woodwind)
Martha Kato (piano)
Olli Hirvonen (guitar)
Evan Gregor (bass)
Rogerio Boccato (percussion)
Fumi Tanakadate and Midori Larsen (taiko)
Guillermo Laporta (video projection)

Midori Larsen is an artist in residence at Culture Lab LIC.
“Crossing the Seas” was supported by New Music USA’s Creator Development Fund in 2022-23.
It was also supported by funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, Statewide Community Regrants Program (formerly the Decentralization program) with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature, and administered by Flushing Town Hall.
