Since October 2015, The Studios at MASS MoCA have hosted over 800 artists and writers for residencies of up to 8 weeks.

About the Studios at MASS MoCA:
The Studios is MASS MoCA’s artist and writers residency program situated within the museum’s factory campus and surrounded by the beautiful Berkshire Mountains. Operated by MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists department, the residency runs year-round and hosts up to 10 artists at a time. Artists of any nationality can apply for stays of 2-8 weeks.

At the Studios at MASS MoCA, selected artists receive:

  • Private, furnished studio space at MASS MoCA, available 24/7.
  • Housing (private bedroom/queen bed, shared kitchen, and bath) in newly renovated apartments directly across the street from the museum.
  • One communal meal per day in the company of fellow artists-in-residence.
  • An optional studios visit with a MASS MoCA curator.
  • 1 year access to our Assets for Artists Business Webinars after your arrival.
  • 3 months of MASS MoCA member benefits, including free access to the museum’s galleries, and discounts on performing arts events and museum store purchases, plus additional access to The Clark while in residence.

COVID-19 Response
(Updated 4.13.22)

The Studios at MASS MoCA has returned to full capacity of 10 artists. Proof of vaccination is required. Artists can remain unmasked in their private studios and within their shared apartments, however MASS MoCA requires that all visitors, artists, and staff continue following COVID safety protocols such as mask-wearing in communal hallways and washing/sanitizing your hands regularly.

Any artist whose residency has to be canceled for COVID-19 reasons will have their residency honored and rescheduled at a later date or reimbursed in full (the artist’s choice). Any artist who chooses to cancel their scheduled residency because of COVID-19 will also be rescheduled or refunded. We hope that this assurance encourages everyone who wishes to apply to the Studios to do so.

Watch this space for updates as we continue to navigate this uncertain time with an eye toward the safety of our visiting artists.
