About the Sherman Family Korea Emerging Lecture Award Program

Since 2017, the Korea Society has presented this annual award to stimulate and support the next generation of U.S. thought leadership on Korea. Presented to scholars in the U.S. from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds, the award has recognized pioneering and impactful scholarship in such fields as: architecture, political economy, political science, poetry, national identity, medical science, maritime conflict, and technology. Eligible candidates include Ph.D. candidates, junior professors (tenure and non-tenure track), researchers, and professionals. The award recognizes both emergent talents as well as emerging topics. About the Sherman Family

The Korea Society’s Sherman Family Emerging Scholar Award was established in 2017 through the generous support of Philip and Birgitta Sherman. Phil Sherman served as a director on the Society’s Board from 2017 to 2024. In the 1970s, he was a senior officer for Korean operations at Citibank in Seoul. These special years left an indelible mark on Phil, Birgitta, and their whole family. Sadly, Phil passed away in December 2024. Benefits

The awardee will present an in-person lecture at The Korea Society before a broad audience. The lecture will be live-streamed and recorded. The awardee will be provided with a $2,500 honorarium, roundtrip travel to New York City, and hotel accommodations.

Requirements

The Society seeks applications from scholars, researchers and specialists from a wide range of disciplines and backgrounds working in the U.S. Prior awardees have explored topics in the arts, architecture, political science and technology and have included Ph.D. candidates, junior professors (tenure & non-tenure track), researchers and professionals. Former applicants have hailed from colleges and universities, research institutions and non-profit organizations in the U.S.

Application Instructions

Applicants are required to:

1. Complete and submit your application which includes a lecture proposal, a CV, and a writing sample.
2. Have two (2) letters of recommendation submitted via the application system.
