Founded in 1973 as Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, LMCC serves, connects, and makes space for artists and community. LMCC seeks a permanent full-time Public Engagement Manager. The Public Engagement Manager is an integral part of the Public Programs team with primary responsibility for developing and implementing the organization’s approach to public engagement.

Responsibilities include:

• Works with the Public Programs team to develop, plan, and implement educational and engagement programs particularly for, but not limited to The Arts Center on Governors Island, including gallery talks, special activities, and activities for families and children
• Manages public engagement staff and volunteers at The Arts Center; Interviews and selects public engagement staff & volunteers; plans, schedules and assigns work to staff and volunteers
• Leads onboarding and training for public engagement staff and volunteers that incorporates LMCC’s commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion
• Creates and oversees feedback and evaluation plans for all of LMCC’s public-facing experiences, providing regular reports and subsequent adjustments and improvements to the visitor service experience at The Arts Center, River To River Festival, and special events
• Prepares and/or consults on exhibition interpretation materials in order to meet best practices for access and inclusion, including labels, gallery notes, family guides, visitor comment books, and other visitor services in close collaboration with the Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs, and other key members of specific projects
• Works with key staff and members of Operations to create a comprehensive over-hire & volunteer recruitment, management, recognition, and retention plan
• Participates in community partnership efforts with other Governors Island organizations and those in Lower Manhattan
• Works with Institutional Advancement team as needed to support special events
• Develops audience engagement and events strategy for all Public Engagement initiatives, such as the River To River Festival, Open Studios, Exhibitions and Installations at The Arts Center
• Develops staffing plans for all public programs based on need and audience development strategy in collaboration with Director of Exhibitions & Public Programs
• Manages seasonal over-hire and their efforts to implement LMCC’s on-site presence at public programs and events
• Works with key staff and members of Operations to create a comprehensive over-hire & volunteer recruitment, management, recognition, and retention plan
• Participates in community partnership efforts with other Governors Island organizations and those in Lower Manhattan
• Assists Institutional Advancement team as needed to support special events
• Provides relevant programming data and content to assist with grant and sponsorship proposals and reports
• Prepares appropriate information, data, and materials for Institutional Advancement’s institutional reports to Executive Directors, Board of Directors, and Board Committees
• Works with Department head, or appropriate Supervisor, to ensure department operates within established financial guidelines and that budget dollars are used responsibly
• Submits expense requests in a timely manner for approval, and ensures expense requests reach Finance Department in a reasonable time frame
• Works to introduce innovative ways to reduce costs
• Follows the organization’s best practices policies and procedures manual and works with other departments to maintain data-integrity
• Monitors supervisory responsibilities’ work load on a day-to-day basis and reassigns tasks as needed to support departmental goals and objectives

The Public Engagement Manager reports to the Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs and supervises seasonal staffs, interns and volunteers.

Requirements

Qualifications: Strong candidates for this position will have:
• Bachelor’s Degree
• 3-5 years experience in arts programming and/or visitor engagement
• Microsoft Office, Internet, Salesforce, EventBrite
• Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills, and facility with budgets. Skilled at interacting with the public and prioritizing their needs in a variety of programming contexts.
• Ability to analyze visitor data and measure it against an organizational mission and specific program objectives.
• Skilled at working collaboratively across different departments. Ability to skillfully interface with community leaders, politicians, and business professionals.
• Ability to stay focused, with keen attention to detail. Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. Strong project management and critical thinking skills.
• Knowledge of NYC arts community a plus.

Working Conditions:
• Maintains a flexible full-time work schedule, taking into account weekend and evening programs, especially during the Summer public season between May-October.
