ArtsFairfax seeks a talented visionary with demonstrated successful leadership and management experience in a non-profit organization. The ideal candidate will be an advocate and champion for the arts, demonstrating exceptional skills in communications, diplomacy, discretion, and persuasion. S/he/they will be experienced working with political bodies, both elected and appointed, and will understand the nuances of working with government and parallel agencies who provide a substantial portion of the organization’s funding. ArtsFairfax is one of the Washington metropolitan area’s leading arts promotion and funding organizations, with a growing, annual budget of $1.9 million. ArtsFairfax provides nearly $800K in competitive grants each year to support local arts organizations in Fairfax County and the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church. More than a granting agency, ArtsFairfax is a leader in creating opportunities to expose the public to the varied and diverse arts and culture in the region and oversees community engagement and arts promotion activities, including the creation of a Fairfax County Poet Laureate, the Capital One Hall Community Arts Partnership, various public art projects, and local art displays at Tysons Corner Center.

ArtsFairfax also provides invaluable tools and resources, including a Public Art Locator web application, a comprehensive calendar of arts events, and more than 2,500 hours of learning through their professional development offerings for artists and arts administrators. Continuing and expanding Arts Fairfax’s mission requires a leader who has the capacity to create, monitor, and implement budgets; guide and manage a terrific, dedicated staff; engage and communicate well with funding organizations, including state and local governments; and work closely and collaboratively with the organization’s board of directors.

The President and CEO reports to the Board of Directors. S/he/they has overall responsibility for implementing the goals laid out in the ArtsFairfax strategic plan and regularly communicates progress toward meeting those goals. S/he/they is responsible for being a strong connector for ArtsFairfax in the community, with political leaders in Fairfax and beyond, with arts venues and artists, and with community partners and civic agencies. The (President) and CEO is responsible for the fiscal management of the organization, which includes diversifying its sources of income, spending wisely, and allocating adequate resources to achieve ArtsFairfax goals. S/he/they is the leading advocate for the organization and for the arts in the county and in Virginia. As the manager of the staff, s/he/they must have the capacity to build trust with the team and engage them in being visionaries for the organization while keeping them focused on implementing the organization’s strategic plan. S/he/they must listen to and inspire the staff, encourage them, hold them accountable, and foster a positive workplace environment before implementing new agendas, restructuring, or making major changes. The President and CEO has a strategic mind and positive attitude, is committed to diversity, equity, and accessibility in all areas the organization touches, and understands the complexities of this mission-driven, public-facing, non-profit organization.
