NYU Grounds and NYU Steinhardt’s Department of Art and Art Professions are collaborating in a new initiative to bring art to campus garden spaces throughout the University.

Through this endeavor we want to highlight the shared environmental spaces that the NYU community and the public have access to.

We hope that this encourages exploration of restive spaces and how art can be a way to accent these spaces and enliven the history of architecture, the city and the campus.

ABOUT THE LOCATION

Mercer Plaza located at 251 Mercer Street was constructed in 2010 by the landscape architect Mathews Nielsen above the University’s Cogeneration Plant which is a source for efficient and sustainable energy for thirty nearby buildings. The Plaza is 13,000 square feet in area with 3,000 square feet of planting beds that feature native trees, shrubs, and perennials to create a naturalistic setting.

The plaza is used heavily by students, faculty, and the community as a pleasant place to relax year-round.
