Speak Cantonese? Mencius Society for the Arts needs your help! Under the Silk and Bamboo Living Traditions initiative Mencius Society for the Arts seeks a Cantonese speaker to serve as interviewer and guide in a short-form documentary production depicting the making of a Cantonese opera community in NYC.

What to Expect
· 12-week commitment: Oct 1, 2025-Dec 31, 2026
· Work 8 Sundays (4-hour block) on location in LES/Chinatown
· Conduct short face-to-face interviews with subjects in Cantonese, using our in-house camcorder or your cell phone (up to 30 min. per subject)
· Transcribe-translate selected footage into English (up to 45 sec. per subject)
· Listen back selected footage and interpret to help producer input English subtitles
· Base stipend: $800. Additional: $150 per interview (up to 10); $25 per hour transcription/interpreting
Requirements
Eligibility to Apply
- Fluency in Cantonese required; ability to read/write Chinese a plus
- Background in the arts preferred (music, dance, theater, or film)
Required Qualifications
· B.A. or MA. -tracked. Interest in the arts/folk arts/Asian American studies a plus
· Oral (and listening) proficiency in Cantonese; knowledge of written Chinese a plus.
