MANAGER OF STUDENT PRODUCTIONS

Organizational Summary:
Playwrights Horizons Theater School has provided thousands of theater students with intensive theater training through a four-year program that emphasizes professional development and interdisciplinary theater making. The curriculum includes courses in acting, directing, playwriting, design, movement, and voice and speech for nearly 200 students each year.

Playwrights Horizons is a writer’s theater dedicated to the support and development of contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists, and to the production of their new work.

Director, Playwright Horizons Theater School

Position Summary:
Playwrights Horizons Theater School is seeking a collaborative, passionate, and self-starting individual to join the administrative team downtown! Alongside the Director this role will produce all student productions which includes managing a team of directors, professional artist mentors, stage managers, house managers, designers, and seasonal box office staff. Additionally, this role will serve as the point of contact for the school’s students, faculty, and staff as it relates to production needs.

Responsibilities:
Manage and oversee the budget for all productions for both Mainstage and up to 30 student led projects each semester.
Hire and supervise approximately 30-35 professional artist mentors each semester, ensure new hire paperwork is completed and submitted for weekly payroll processing
Recruit and onboard designers, stage managers, and other creatives involved with the Downtown and Mainstage productions each semester, ensure new hire paperwork is completed and submitted for weekly payroll processing
Create and negotiate between 5-10 Mainstage production contracts, depending on the show needs, each semester
Coordinate the enrollment of Advanced Professional Training students in collaboration with the Manager of Academic Affairs and Lead Seminar Teacher including section placement.
Coordinate with Lead Seminar Teacher regarding producing deadlines and deliverables.
Manage production resources and advise students as to their utilization.
Advise students on how to troubleshoot production issues that arise
Arrange and negotiate rights for production materials.
Attend and advise Mainstage production meetings
Schedule the spaces for all rehearsals and performances for both Mainstage and student productions
Create and implement the design theme for all Downtown productions
Create and maintain promotion for student productions and other graphic assets on the building’s monitors.
Liaise with NYU about student production needs and space usage, and coordinate with NYU to facilitate open call auditions for student productions

Manage and maintain ticketing websites for all student productions and the Mainstage
Supports the Administrative Director in managing, tracking, and reconciling specific lines of the larger School budget
Hire and supervise approximately 2-3 part-time box office staff
Coordinate First Friday in partnership with the Director.
Assist with the execution of various special events and meetings through the school year, including Final Friday and orientation.

Liaise with Playwrights Horizons Theater Staff to coordinate student rehearsal observance throughout the season
Provide general administrative support to faculty, staff, and students, as needed

Skills & Qualifications:
Minimum 5-7 years of practical experience working in theatrical production or management
Ability to work nights and weekends, based on the production schedule needs
Able to work from the office a minimum of 4 days a week during the semester
Strong administrative experience, highly organized with keen attention to detail
Passion for working with students in an educational environment
Displays an understanding of both the technical and creative aspects of theater
Ability to perform manual labor as needed
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially with young people
Comfortable working in a Google Workspace and Slack
Proficiency in Adobe and InDesign software
Basic understanding of accounting principles, desired

Compensation:

Salary: $60,000
