THE SEARCH
The Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) seeks an accomplished, innovative and collaborative professional to serve as the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Curator of Contemporary Art and Department Head. Since its founding in 1876, the Philadelphia Museum of Art has actively collected and proudly displayed the art of its time. From those roots, the museum has developed one of the most prestigious, dynamic and enterprising collections of modern and contemporary art among this country’s encyclopedic art museums. The collection includes modern masterpieces as well as a remarkable range and vitality of contemporary works, including installation, painting, sculpture, video, and more. Both groundbreaking and challenging, visually inventive, and experientially engaging, the collection makes the museum a destination and serves as an invaluable resource for students, educators, and the many artists who’ve made Philadelphia their home. The Sachs Curator of Contemporary Art will be uniquely positioned in the Museum to foster and strengthen connections with geographically defined historic collections and forge new directions as artists continue to innovate and reframe the definitions and nature of art.

The Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Curator of Contemporary Art and Department Head will oversee the Sachs budget and manage a team of approximately 8-10 staff. The position cultivates and stewards the Museum’s Contemporary Art Committee. The museum has a total annual operating budget of $62 million and an endowment valued at $600 million. PMA recently concluded a $600 million capital campaign, the largest for any cultural organization in Philadelphia’s history.
