Nimbus announces opportunities for Jersey City Dance Artists/Choreographers to receive financial relief from Covid-related hardship, and space grants to develop new dance work at the Nimbus Arts Center. Dance artists have been among those impacted most acutely by the Covid-19 shutdown. This funding program is designed to help support the immediate needs, career development, and access to rehearsal space for Jersey City dance artists. As leaders who assemble creative teams, choreographers will be provided grants for their immediate individual use as well as stipends to support their work and further disseminate funding to dancers, collaborators and for production costs. Funds are made possible through an intermediary grant from the New Jersey Arts and Culture Recovery Fund.

Nimbus is committed to awarding no less than 50% of grant funds to Black choreographers. Choreographers who are BIPOC, of all gender identities, and abilities are encouraged to apply. Artists working in all dance genres are eligible. All applicants must live and/or work in Jersey City.

Selected choreographers will be granted:

  • $1000 in immediate covid relief
  • $500/month stipend during the residency period (3 total months: March, April, May) to help support creative costs (dancer fees, costumes, music, etc.)
  • 25 hours of studio space at the Nimbus Arts Center
  • Collaboration with a videographer and lighting designer to produce a high quality rendering of choreographer’s work.
  • Career consultation with Nimbus administrative staff
  • Works created during this residency will be presented at a low attendance/live streamed performance on May 22, 2021, with choreographer Q&A panel following the performance. If it is deemed unsafe to proceed based on local and state guidelines, the video created during the residency will be premiered at a streamed event on May 22.

Note about space use: Nimbus upholds high standards relating to covid safety for our artists, patrons, and staff. Selected choreographers will be expected to adhere to all protocols as defined by the Nimbus Covid-19 Safety Policy and Procedure Manual. Choreographers will work with Nimbus Staff to develop a monthly schedule that works for all parties.

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria:

• Project proposal quality (artistry, uniqueness of concept)
• Project feasibility
• Need (including demonstrable financial impact on account of Covid-19)
• Demonstrated previous contribution to Jersey City arts field and/or community
