In Practice 2023 marks the twentieth anniversary of SculptureCenter’s signature open call program for artists, and the first year of a new format for generating a yearlong series of solo institutional presentations. Our new format will provide more substantial financial and production support to artists and will integrate the In Practice program into SculptureCenter’s programmatic activities throughout the calendar year.

Artists who have not yet had an institutional exhibition in New York City are invited to submit proposals for solo presentations in a designated gallery space at SculptureCenter. Artists are also invited to propose off-site projects, publishing initiatives, performances, and nontraditional formats which will be considered based on feasibility. Up to six artists will be selected to participate in the program throughout 2023.

Proposals should reflect new work to be realized in 2023.

Proposals will be reviewed relative to the following criteria: quality of proposal and prior work; engagement with emerging working methods and idiosyncratic ideas; rigor in connection or departure from prior work and interests; responsiveness to the site and context (physical or otherwise) of SculptureCenter as an institution; feasibility of the project with regard to budget and timeline.

Proposal drawings/renderings are encouraged.

Please refer to the floorplan for details about the location and dimensions of the gallery available for In Practice proposals.
