About the Chinese American Arts Council (CAAC)

Mission & History
Founded in 1975, the Chinese American Arts Council (CAAC) supports the cultural arts of New York City’s Chinese-heritage communities and provides platforms and opportunities for both performing and visual artists. Their mission is to engage audiences from all backgrounds through the arts, with a special focus on the Chinese-heritage community.

Since its inception, CAAC has presented hundreds of performances and exhibitions—including Chinese opera, theater, and music—in venues across the city. Their Gallery 456 space has showcased the work of over 250 artists of Chinese or Asian heritage through solo and group exhibitions. On average, they present four live performance runs and ten visual art shows annually, in addition to co-sponsoring or collaborating on arts-related and educational programming.

CAAC is led by Founder and Director Alan Chow, with staff support from Yukai Chen.

Programming & Outreach
CAAC’s work spans three main areas:

Performing Arts: They curate and present traditional Chinese opera, theater, dance, and concerts by renowned artists.

Visual Arts: Gallery 456 hosts 8–12 solo and group exhibitions annually, with accompanying programs.

Outreach & Co-Presenting: They co-sponsor events, connect Chinese-heritage artists with presenting organizations, support community engagement, and serve as a liaison to Chinese-language media.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Patience and attentiveness when interacting with gallery visitors, including elderly guests
