FULL-TIME TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITION IN DESIGNED OBJECTS

The Department of Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects (AIADO) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position to begin in August of 2023. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, and current academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

PROGRAM PROFILE
Drawing on both established and emerging fields of design, the Designed Objects program teaches designers to see objects, systems, experiences, and scenarios as activators for creative exploration, critical inquiry, social agency, and global change.

Alumni from the program practice across the design spectrum in areas such as industrial design; independent brand development; furniture and domestic objects; user experience; fashion and style; virtual reality and worldbuilding; medical research and innovation; design education; and design/ cultural curation.

The School offers a professional Master of Design degree in Designed Objects. The AIADO Department also offers courses within the interdisciplinary BFA and MFA programs. Teaching in Designed Objects includes collaborations with the Departments of Sculpture, Ceramics, Fashion Design, and others. Recent or ongoing projects include partnerships with Bosch, WantedDesign NYC, South by Southwest (SxSW), and SAIC at Homan Square.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Full-time faculty in Designed Objects teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design school environment of SAIC. The successful candidate will be responsible for: teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in the department; graduate advising; developing new trajectories, courses, and curriculum for the program; discovering new partnerships; conducting research and/or practice in the area of design; and participating in the SAIC community through ongoing curricular development, departmental administration, and school governance.

QUALIFICATIONS
A graduate degree in design or relevant field of study is preferred. Significant teaching experience is preferred. A professional practice within an established or emerging design field is required. This practice may include industrial design; experience design; design futures; interactive design; design worldbuilding; AR/VR; independent design; sustainable/climate design; materials exploration; design advocacy; or human-centered innovation.

The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds, and who will create a positive, inventive, and productively critical learning environment. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
