The Department of Art Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position with a focus on teacher education to begin in August of 2023. Salary is competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with level of practice, scholarship, and current academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.

DEPARTMENT PROFILE
With historical ties to the formative teacher education programs at the Art Institute of Chicago and diverse cultural organizations throughout the city of Chicago, the Department of Art Education has been an innovator in the field for over 150 years. SAIC’s art education programs prepare students to become exemplary teachers, cultural workers, and practitioners of innovative art and design education who are committed to shaping socially responsive institutions and vibrant communities. Department faculty are transdisciplinary practitioners whose innovative pedagogical practices and programming initiatives make them leaders in the field of art education.

Art Education is one of 23 departments at SAIC and currently has six full-time faculty and over ten part-time faculty, offering more than 25 courses each year to undergraduate and graduate students through three degree programs. Two programs are certified by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE): Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Art Education (BFAAE) and the 48-credit Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The 36-hour Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE) focuses on teaching in a range of contexts including, but not limited to, museums, schools, and communities.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The ideal candidate will be prepared to teach courses in teacher education, supervise teaching practicum, advise graduate and undergraduate students, and participate in the SAIC community through departmental administration, curriculum development, and school governance. Administrative responsibilities may include the oversight of graduate and undergraduate degree programs; Illinois State Board of Education program review; SAIC, community, and constituency relations; and collaborative program development within the School and the department. The ideal candidate will maintain a professional scholarly and/or creative practice; represent the department in local, regional, and national professional forums; and provide service to the department, institution, and community.

QUALIFICATIONS
A terminal degree (PhD, EdD, or MFA) in art education or a related field is preferred, though commensurate experience may be considered. The ideal candidate is an experienced pk-12 art educator with experience teaching at the college level, who maintains a robust creative and/or scholarly practice that demonstrates knowledge of and participation in contemporary fields of art and education. Candidates should emphasize creative and critical perspectives in the expanded field, and experiences that demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively, including building relationships with community partners. Applicants must provide evidence of, and recognition for, their practice in research, publications, presentations, and/or art-making. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing perspectives, ways of thinking, and/or unique sets of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field.
