The Film Lab’s annual 72 Hour Shootout is all about accessibility, community and growth. We are happy to offer you courses led by professionals from a wide variety of fields in filmmaking. Centering the Basic Filmmaking course with hands-on skills, the micro-courses will help you be successful in the 72 Hour Shootout and grow your career beyond!

Micro Virtual 1

4/30: “Running an Effective Crowdfunding Campaign” with Christopher Hwisu Kim

2:00-2:30pm (EST)

As intimidating as crowdfunding campaigns can be, with the right mix of messaging, outreach, and savvy, they can be a tremendous source of funding and marketing. Fresh off a successful crowdfunding campaign for his short film “Missile,” Christopher Hwisu Kim shares the hard-earned lessons he’s learned along the way.

Micro Virtual 2

5/7: “Editing in 72 hours” with 72 Hour Shootout 2020 Coordinator, award-winning Shootout alum and current Shootout judge, Tyler Ham Pong

2:00-2:30pm EST

A beginner’s crash course in Editing, taught by a former winner of the 72 Hour Film Shootout. In this Zoom lecture followed by a Q&A, attendees will receive a PDF with helpful tips and links for this discussion on the technical and creative side of editing for the Shootout. If you were wondering how to set yourself up for success, Tyler Ham Pong will work through the set up (slating, coverage, etc.), workflow (importing data, synching video and audio), timeline basics (transitions, filters, plugins), and finishing touches (color grading, audio sweetening, exporting).

Micro Virtual 3

5/14: “Directing Action / Fight Choreography” with award-winning Shootout alum Toy Lei

2:00-2:30pm (EST)

There’s an art to directing action, and some of the people who command that art are of Chinese decsent and are even (gasp!) women - like Ms. Toy! Toy will go through some of the basics of how to carry that art through our Asian-American filmmaking from how to cast to stunts to what an action director vs. what a director who makes action movies is.

Micro Virtual 4
