The Curatorial Associate reports to the Director of Exhibitions and Programs and will be a key member of the team working to implement and expand Print Center New York’s curatorial program. Working closely with internal staff and external collaborators, including guest curators, they will be responsible for implementing two exhibitions per year, along with related public programs and publications. With the Executive Director and Director of Exhibitions and Programs, they will contribute to long-term curatorial planning and strategic initiatives aligned with institutional goals.

Their ideal candidate has a strong track record in successfully delivering curatorial projects in the context of a small, collaborative team. They will demonstrate: engagement with contemporary art, art history, and curatorial practice; skills in public speaking, writing, and research; the ability to juggle concurrent projects and meet deadlines; and a record of cultivating relationships in art and cultural communities. This new hire joins a group of kind, dedicated, and enthusiastic arts professionals who are propelled by Print Center New York’s commitment to access to the arts and to innovative scholarship. The position is part time, three days (24 hours) a week, with the goal of transitioning to full time. Target start date is in February 2024.

Exhibitions & Publications Responsibilities:
• Work with Print Center New York’s leadership team in aligning curatorial strategy with institutional goals and participate in meetings with Program Committee
• In close collaboration with an internal exhibitions team and with guest curators, shepherd curatorial projects from their proposal stage through research and production
• Maintain up-to-date curatorial rationales and checklists, draft loan requests, and assist with borrowing negotiations, as needed
• Work collaboratively to develop exhibition layouts, critically evaluate and edit interpretive materials, and improve in-gallery visitor experience
• Work collaboratively to develop installation plans, editorial workflows, and budgets
• Manage editorial content for publications, critically evaluating and editing texts to ensure material is rigorous, clear, and persuasive
• Assist with press releases, grant narratives, and other written content, as needed

Public Engagement Responsibilities:
• Research, generate, and participate in public programming in a variety of formats (tours, conversations, performances, digital content, etc.) to extend engagement with exhibitions on view
• Lead exhibition tours and communicate ideas and processes in a way that accommodates a variety of audience needs and backgrounds; lead staff training tours
• Visit galleries, museums, printshops, and artists’ studios to represent Print Center New York and to maintain current knowledge of the print and contemporary art field and current museum/curatorial practice

Requirements

Qualifications:
• Three to five years of gallery, museum, or nonprofit curatorial experience
• MA or equivalent preferred in art history, curatorial practice, or related area
• Demonstrated dexterity managing projects, with the ability to adapt and produce results on multiple projects with shifting priorities
• Excellent communication skills and a talent for connecting with a range of collaborators, audiences, and stakeholders
• Demonstrated creative and strategic thinking, with an ability to connect their work to broader artistic and cultural conversations, tendencies, and histories; specialization in printmaking and print history is desirable, but not required
• Strong writing and editing skills
• Ability to work Saturdays and occasional weekday evenings
