Abrons Arts Center’s Curatorial AIRspace Residency provides one New York City-based curator or curatorial collaborative with an honorarium, production budget, materials budget, and office space to support the curation of 2 exhibitions.

The application for our 2022-2023 Curatorial AIRspace Residency is open through March 8, 2022.

Application:

Abrons Arts Center’s Curatorial AIRspace Residency provides one New York City-based curator or curatorial collaborative with an honorarium, production budget, materials budget, and office space to support the curation of 2 exhibitions:

Exhibition 1: The Curator will organize an exhibition developed during their residency period, based on a proposal submitted in this application.

Exhibition 2: The Curator will organize a group exhibition featuring the 2022-2023 Visual Artist AIRspace residency cohort. The Cohort will be announced in Spring 2022.

Both exhibitions will be presented in Abrons Arts Center’s galleries during our Spring 2023 season.

Program Components:

  • $5,000 Curatorial Honorarium
  • 30 hours of fully subsidized studio rental time in any of our performance studios (excluding Studio G-05) and theaters. Please visit our website to learn more about our studio and theater spaces
  • A private office space at the Center, which is located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side

Exhibition 1 Resources:

  • $3,000 Artist(s) Honorarium Budget
  • $2,000 Materials Budget
  • $2,000 Production Budget to support installation and de-installation labor

Exhibition 2 Resources:

  • $1,000 Materials Budget
  • $2,000 Production Budget to support installation and de-installation labor

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be based in New York City and living within the 5 boroughs at the time of application submission and during the residency period.
  • Applicants and all associated collaborators who will be onsite at Abrons during the residency and production period must be fully COVID-19 vaccinated. Please learn more about our COVID-19 policies by reading our COVID-19 Safety Rules. https://www.abronsartscenter.org/covid-safety-rules/
  • Curators working in practices that are interdisciplinary in nature, including performance and social practice, are encouraged to apply.
  • Curatorial collaboratives groups are invited to apply. Collaboratives can only submit one (1) application; Collaboratives that submit more than 1 application for the same project will be disqualified from the review process.
  • Curators who are enrolled in degree-granting programs or will be students during the residency period are not eligible to apply.
  • Abrons Arts Center is a multi-use building that hosts a range of programming throughout the year, including children’s classes and high-capacity live events. Applicants are encouraged to keep the range of our audiences and building activities in mind when devising their Exhibition proposals.
  • As the arts pillar of the historic Henry Street Settlement, Abrons Arts Center is committed to the belief that artistic practice is key to a socio-politically engaged and healthy society. Applicants should closely review the Abrons Arts Center’s Mission Statement and Declaration of Inclusion before applying for the Residency.
  • Applications will be reviewed and selected by Abrons Arts Center’s leadership team. Due to the high volume of applications received, we are unable to provide feedback to applicants at this time.
