OVERVIEW
Fractured Atlas is seeking a full‐time Communications Associate. Fractured Atlas is a national, fully remote nonprofit arts service organization. Their work is guided by the belief that some of the boldest, most urgent creative work happens outside of institutions, led by individual artists, emerging collectives, and grassroots organizations. Their mission is to make the journey from inspiration to living practice more accessible and equitable for artists and creatives. They run the largest fiscal sponsorship program in the country, supporting thousands of active projects in every creative medium across all 50 states. Through fundraising tools, educational resources, visa letters, community programming, and 1-on-1 support, we help artists access the funding, time, and community they need to make the art the world needs.

As their Communications Associate, you’ll shape almost every message their members and public audiences see, from closure notices and event invites to newsletters and Instagram carousels. You’ll take a request from “here’s what’s changing” all the way to “it’s live on every channel.” You’ll also keep the systems behind that work clear and running, so the whole team has room to be creative.

We’re looking for an organized, multi-faceted, curious communicator who notices things: the audience they haven’t reached yet, the caption that could be more accessible, the small friction a better workflow would remove. You speak up about what you notice. You’ll enjoy this job if you like a day that moves between writing, designing, scheduling, answering member questions, and running event tech.
You’ll report to the Director, Communications, and join a Communications & Community team that’s energetic, inventive, and collaborative. You don’t need an arts or nonprofit background. You just need to care about independent artists and be willing to learn the field.

At Fractured Atlas, we individually and collectively work hard to carry out their organization’s mission. They also understand that work is just one part of life and, through a culture of care, support team members having full and robust lives outside of work. With that foundation, their organizational culture embraces people who are open to:
- Building trust with others and addressing equitable distribution of responsibilities when collaborating.
- Learning new ways of working while welcoming change as a way to reshape processes/policies/programming that no longer serve their values.
- Transparency in communications, decision making, and feedback.
- Centering care and connection in their individual work and in relation to their colleagues.

We recognize that the culture and core values of an organization should continue to evolve to reflect the world they live in. At any given time, they recognize that there might be emerging values other than their stated values (bit.ly/HWW-WhoWhatWhy) and they continue to have conversations about stated and emerging values.

Additionally, at Fractured Atlas they work to adhere to anti-racism and anti-oppression principles (bit.ly/ARAOguidelines) in all areas of their internal and external work. This commitment is grounded in their belief that change is possible, and that their work and that of the artistic community as a whole will grow stronger as oppression is eliminated.

In their current phase of this journey towards being an Anti-Racist Anti-Oppressive organization, the whole staff is engaged in all staff ARAO meetings led by rotating teams and undergo training as part of their onboarding process. They recognize that they do not have all of the answers as they pursue this work. This work will continue to shift as the Fractured Atlas team changes. They ask that new team members join them as they continue to learn, practice, and grow in this work. Learn more about what it’s like to work at Fractured Atlas here: bit.ly/HWW-Homepage.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Create content (30%)
- Own the pipeline for routine member communications, including closures, service updates, opportunities, deadlines, and events. You’ll handle intake, copywriting, review, and distribution, then track how it’s doing.
- Design social content using Canva, including graphics, carousels, short video, and of course, memes! You’ll write captions, schedule posts, and keep up with comments, DMs, and tags.
- Build their emails, from newsletters and announcements to fundraising campaigns and leadership messages. That means handling layout, links, A/B tests, and post-send checks.
- Write alt text and image descriptions that meet their accessibility standards.
- Pitch post ideas, formats, and trends that could reach new audiences or deepen belonging among members.

Keep communications running (30%)
- Answer tickets in their Communications & Community Zendesk queue in the Fractured Atlas voice, and escalate when needed.
- Serve as their Media Monitoring Lead. You’ll check a dashboard for mentions of Fractured Atlas across social and news, and flag anything notable to the Director.
- Pull monthly social, email, and web analytics for board reports, grants, and planning.
- Keep the team’s admin moving, including Board meeting minutes, a monthly staff newsletter, contractor paperwork, and operating grant materials.

Support Community programming (20%)
- Run the tech for live Zoom events, including registration, recording, breakout rooms, Q&A, and captions, so hosts can focus on the room.
- Book ASL interpreters and closed-captioners, coordinate with speakers, and set up Zapier automations for registration and reminders.
- Promote events on social and email, answer member questions beforehand, and share recordings afterward.
- Support the Community team’s events and campaigns as needed, especially as IRL programming grows.

Keep their channels in good shape (20%)
- Keep Mailchimp lists, Linktree links, social bios, and email templates current, on brand, and accessible.
- Publish guest posts and reposts to their blog with the Editorial Specialist, and prepare interview transcripts and audio.
- Help keep their Notion workspace organized, including calendars, intake forms, and process docs.
- Audit their channels regularly for broken links, outdated info, and accessibility gaps, and fix what you find.

LOCATION
This position is US-based and 100% virtual (with travel about 1-2 times per year*). You can live anywhere in the country but most meetings fall during a 10 AM-6 PM ET window.

*They have full staff and team in person/hybrid gatherings 1-2 times a year, but they respect that individuals have different risk levels with travel and will work with employees to determine what is possible, with consideration for what is unsafe or uncomfortable for team members.

COMPENSATION
This is a full-time non-exempt position. Salary is $32.70/hour ($68,016 annualized). Fractured Atlas has fixed-tier compensation, so everyone at each tier makes the same. Learn more about their compensation structure here: bit.ly/HWW-Compensation.

Requirements

WHAT THEY’RE LOOKING FOR
- You’ve created social content for an organization, brand, project, or community (not just a personal account), and you’re comfortable working in Canva.
- You write clearly and warmly. You can turn a list of facts into clear, engaging language for different channels, in an established voice. You’re GIF-forward and can match any emoji to a bullet point.
- You’re highly organized. You can keep lots of small, recurring tasks and deadlines moving at once with tools like Notion.
- You’ve used Mailchimp or a similar email platform, or you’re eager to learn one quickly.
- You stay calm and steady when the event tech glitches, and can execute on Plan B.
- You care about accessibility in practice, including alt text, captions, plain language, and readable design.
- You’re comfortable building and using automations in tools like Zapier and Notion.
- You bring patience and compassion to support conversations, whether they happen in tickets or DMs.
- You can tell when a request is bigger than the template, and you’re confident asking for help.

Bonus points for short-form video editing, meme fluency, podcasting experience, or a background in the arts or fundraising.

Don’t check every box? Please apply anyway. We’d rather hear from a curious, organized communicator who’s ready to learn than miss out on you.
