Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Studio Art – Painting in the Expanded Field

The School of Art + Art History in the College of the Arts at the University of Florida invites applications for a tenure-accruing faculty position in Interdisciplinary Studio Art—Painting in the Expanded Field at the level of Assistant Professor. This position will contribute to a vibrant program with a new forward-looking curriculum at a top-5 public research university. We are seeking a painter and dedicated educator who can teach at all levels in an interdisciplinary art program. The successful candidate will have expertise in painting, possess a broad knowledge of the field (material, technique, form, and content), and demonstrate a clear commitment to the elasticity of painting in the 21st century. They will engage our students with contemporary, historical, and conceptual issues; teach various approaches to painting from figurative to the expanded field; and help students develop a contemporary studio practice.

Responsibilities:

● Teach a 2-2 load of courses
○ Undergraduate to graduate level painting courses including observational and figure painting, foundations, and courses appropriate to the candidate’s expertise. Other courses may also include WARP and/or a course in the university’s General Education Humanities curriculum.

● Mentor and advise graduate students and supervise graduate committee and independent studies
● Conduct a strong program of creative research appropriate to the discipline
● Actively participate in our learning community, finding innovative ways to connect the arts to critical discourses in other disciplines
● Participate in shared governance through service to the school, college, university, and profession

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:
● MFA in studio art, Painting emphasis
● Relevant teaching or instructional experience beyond graduate teaching assistantships
● Active studio practice with evidence of emerging or established recognition in the field
● Evidence of a commitment to innovative and interdisciplinary curricula
● Critical approach to the legacies, histories, and theories of art and art practices
● Evidence of success in promoting an environment that advances access, equity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:
● Teaching experience 1 – 3 years beyond graduate assistantships as the instructor of record at the university level
● Experience teaching at the graduate level
● Record of excellence in creative research
● Capacity to advance interdisciplinary collaborations in teaching and research
● Strong organizational, management, and communication skills
