The Department of Theatre Arts at New Mexico State University invites applicants for two tenure-track Assistant Professors in the area of Design. These two Design Faculty will (between them) cover multiple areas of theatrical design, including: Scenic, Lighting, Costume, and Props, with the welcome possibility for other areas of expertise and interest, including but not limited to Production Design for Digital Media and Film, Video/Projection Design for live performance, Scenic Painting, Makeup and Carpentry.

We seek candidates dedicated to a continued creative practice in the field as well as excellence in teaching. We’re looking for colleagues who embrace learning and innovation, will contribute to a collaborative environment, promote a healthy community among faculty, staff and students, prioritize student-learning, and actively work to build greater equity, inclusion and diversity within our department and university.

The assistant professors in these positions will teach undergraduate courses in their design areas, as well as Intro to Design, and other courses as assigned. Professors have the ability to propose courses in areas of interest. They will also design and/or mentor students in designing each of the productions in the department’s mainstage season, work with the Technical Director, Costume Shop Manager and other staff and designers to budget and realize designs as needed, advise and mentor students, supervise student design work, and support the department, the university and the community through service and outreach.

Our courses serve students across the university, including 70 undergraduate Theatre majors, and Digital Film Making and Animation majors. We engage in outreach within the broader Las Cruces community, and are committed to using the arts to serve and reflect this community.

Requirements

Candidates must have an MFA in Scenic, Costume and/or Lighting Design or an equivalent terminal degree and professional design experience. At least one year of university level teaching experience (graduate teaching assistantships included) is preferred. Ideal candidates will have experience working across disciplines (including designing for film, TV and other digital media as well as live theatre).

Additionally:
• Candidates with expertise in Costume Design should have experience in costume rendering, garment construction, dyeing, 3-D crafting, and alterations.
• Candidates with expertise in Scenic Design should have experience in preparing sketches, models, scaled drafting, renderings, and paint elevations, etc. They should have extensive working knowledge of industry standard software (e.g. Vectorworks, cinema4D, AutoCAD), and equipment.
• Candidates with expertise in Lighting Design should have experience in drafting to-scale plots, creating the necessary hook-ups, channel schedules, color schedules and magic sheets for each production, and working with industry-standard software (e.g. Vectorworks, AutoCAD, QLab) and equipment.
