The ICA’s Adult Programs and Interpretation Internship provides a qualified student the opportunity to engage with contemporary arts education for adult learners for an 8-month term (October 2024—May 2025). The Adult Programs and Interpretation Intern supports various programs highlighting artists and community voices, including the ICA’s Gallery Talk program and programs such as adult art-making experiences. The intern works independently on research assignments relating to upcoming exhibitions and adult programming. The intern will leverage their independent research to develop and test one innovative and engaging program related to exhibitions on view. The intern will also support the development and implementation (including staff training) of an interactive installation in the ICA’s Poss Family Mediatheque.
Under the direction of the ICA’s Education Coordinator, Adult Audience Engagement, the Adult Programs and Interpretation Intern will learn about museum operations, gain skills in adult programming, design and implementation of interpretive resources, and engage with diverse contemporary art audiences. This is a part-time, temporary position.
WORKING AT THE ICA:
All ICA employees are required to reside in Massachusetts and within a commuting distance from their Seaport location as of their first day of work.
Responsibilities:
- With guidance from the Education Coordinator, Adult Audience Engagement, coordinate and implement adult programs, including talks and art-making experiences.
- Complete research assignments relating to upcoming exhibitions, adult programming, and museum interpretation.
- Update the Education department wiki, an internal training resource, with relevant content on upcoming exhibitions.
- Advised by the Education Coordinator, Adult Audience Engagement, intern will design, prepare, test and evaluate one innovative and engaging adult program related to exhibitions on view.
- Support the Education Coordinator, Adult Audience Engagement the development and implementation of an interactive installation in the ICA’s Poss Family Mediatheque including research, ordering materials, and activity testing.
- With support from the Education Coordinator, Adult Audience Engagement, develop and lead training for the - Visitor Experience staff on the Poss Family Mediatheque installation with information on how to maintain the space and engage with the activity.
- Attend interdepartmental meetings, exhibit walkthroughs, and educator training sessions.
- Commit to working onsite 2 days per week for the duration of the internship.
Requirements
- Undergraduate candidates must be current third-year students/junior and above. Graduate students and recent graduates are welcome to apply.
- Must possess strong research skills, excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), and organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively or independently on projects.
- Ability to speak confidently in public.
- Possess a desire to work with diverse adult learners and an interest in art, museums, culture, and learning.
- Ability to engage in spirited discussion while maintaining perspective, a professional demeanor, and a sense of humor.
- Solid experience with MS Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and Power Point.
- Spanish and/or Haitian Creole speaking ability, a plus.
- Occasional evening and weekend hours required.
Physical Requirements:
- Possess mobility to work in an office setting and use office equipment; move about throughout the museum.
- Prolonged periods of remaining stationary working on a computer, standing and/or moving about in the office to access files, printers, etc.
- Ability to lift, push and/or pull 10-15 lbs., keyboarding and gripping.
- Ability to see, listen and talk for extended periods in person, over the telephone and computer, and understand printed materials.
- Must be able to exchange accurate information with visitors, staff, departments, and vendors.

Rate: $19.00 per hour
