Lo Hei Celebration

Join us in celebrating the Year of the Snake! This year, our annual Lo Hei event will take place at House of Joy on Monday, February 24. The evening will include an interactive Lo Hei ritual, dinner, drinks, and a raffle.

Lo Hei (or Yusheng), also known as a Prosperity Toss, is a Cantonese-style salad popularized in Singapore and Malaysia. For this communal ritual, each Lo Hei ingredient is introduced with a saying symbolizing a wish for the new year, culminating in all participants shouting wishes and tossing the ingredients with chopsticks—the higher your toss, the higher your fortune’s growth.

Created by Gabrielle Widjaja (Gentle Oriental) this year’s image celebrates the Year of the Snake, widely symbolizing introspection, transformation, and renewal. Gabrielle is a multidisciplinary artist and designer with a foundational practice in graphic design and illustration, though most well-known for her tattoo practice. Widjaja explains their thinking behind the design:

This design is inspired by the Year of the Wood Snake, a year promising growth and new beginnings. The Ouroboros motif traditionally represents the idea of life, death, rebirth – the eternal cycle of renewal and life, and is paired with a flowering peony branch.

Youngmi Mayer is a comedian and writer. She is the author of I’m Laughing Because I’m Crying and the host of the Hairy Butthole Podcast.

Hong-Ling Wee

Lo Hei Expert Emcee

Dr. Hong-Ling Wee is a scientist-turned-artist whose work focuses on looking homeward to find extraordinariness in the ordinary. With installations ranging from 200 to 2000 sq. feet, Hong-Ling has exhibited in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Korea, China and Singapore. Her work has been featured in numerous international publications and her ceramics are in the permanent public collections of the National Gallery (Singapore), the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park (Japan), the Fule International Ceramic Art Museum (China) and the Guangxi National Art Center (China). In addition to her own artwork, Hong-Ling has also organized and produced an 11-day Singapore Arts Festival in NYC to celebrate Singapore’s fifty years of independence in 2015. Among her accolades is an award of Outstanding Achievement and Contribution to Community Empowerment from the Society of Foreign Consuls in New York City.

Gentle Oriental aka Gabrielle Widjaja

Gentle Oriental aka. Gabrielle Widjaja (she/they) is a Chinese-Indonesian creative native to the Bay Area, California and currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Under the artist moniker Gentle Oriental, Gabrielle creates art that draws inspiration from their cultural background and western upbringing as a child of the Chinese-Indonesian diaspora. She is a multidisciplinary artist and designer with a foundational practice in graphic design and illustration, though most well-known for her tattoo practice. Her work is conceptually driven by vignettes of emotion and identity, and her visual language is inspired by traditional Asian motifs, elemental flows of Qi, and modern western aesthetics.
