Book description: Why Karen Carpenter Matters by Karen Tongson is a hybrid memoir and cultural criticism that explores the enduring significance of the 1970s pop icon, Karen Carpenter, beyond her mainstream image. Tongson, a queer Filipino immigrant, interweaves her own life story with Carpenter’s, arguing that Carpenter’s music and persona resonate deeply with marginalized communities, including people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ individuals, who find meaning in her “perfect” but melancholic voice and lyrics. The book re-examines Carpenter’s legacy, moving past the tragic narrative to find new relevance in her work for those outside the white, suburban context she often represented.
