The Dream of the Audience

Wednesday, October 9, 2024
7:30 – 9PM

In her poetry, writing, and notes, the late artist and poet Theresa Hak Kyung Cha frequently wrote about the audience, as “my distant audience,” “a distant relative” and “I want to be the dream of the audience.” In her new extraordinary film and non-fiction writing, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s niece Christina Cha addresses her late aunt as her audience and as an intimate relative, and “dream of the audience.” Through her powerful documentary You Are My Audience and writing on her late aunt, Christina Cha features her family’s negotiation of her aunt’s tragic assault and murder just a week after the publication of her formative book Dictee.

This event includes also a screening of a short film (re)Dictee, 2023 by filmmaker Linden Renz.

Artist Statement: Linden Renz is a filmmaker, creative producer, and TNS graduate living in New York City. (re)Dictee is an audio-visual entanglement with the work of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and her encounters in Dictee with pre-verbal, non-linear thought as the germ of speech.

The Dream of the Audience is a special session of the graduate seminar Critical Gestures/Creative Queries and an event for Art Writing concentration in the Creative Writing MFA Program at The New School.

Q/A moderated by Margaret Rhee, Assistant Professor of Writing Across Media and Chair of Art Writing
