Susan Tosk Memorial Exhibition “Keen Vision— A Legacy of Susan Tosk"

Born in Brooklyn, Susan Tosk (1944–2026) was a science major; having studied biology, she brought that same scientific eye for observation into the world of Japanese art, developing an unwavering love for the Japanese people and culture, especially Japanese art, and devoting her life to collecting and researching Japanese crafts. To honor her, following her passing this past February at the age of 81, The Nippon Gallery presents the memorial exhibition “Keen Vision — A Legacy of Susan Tosk,” opening September 14.

Her collecting grew into vast holdings spanning the Edo through the Showa periods, but her true passion lay in the cloisonné, metalwork, textiles, and sculpture of the Meiji era. This exhibition presents a selection of 44 Meiji-era works drawn from her collection. On view will be cloisonné, metalwork, textiles, and silverwork — the finest examples of Meiji craftsmanship, made with meticulous attention to detail.
