What role can the arts play in activism? Conversely, how can activist energies shape one’s art practice? In this panel, we grapple with these questions with performance-makers from across Southeast Asia.

In the Philippines, Alon Segarra tackles issues surrounding extrajudicial killings as well as agrarian land reform. In Thailand, Pavinee Samakkabutr champions freedom of expression as part of a wider pro-democracy movement. And in Indonesia, Naomi Srikandi initiates a feminist space that provides care, solidarity and resistance against dominant systems. This panel will be moderated by Wild Rice’s resident playwright Alfian Sa’at and is the third Wild Rice panel featuring Southeast Asian speakers. This event is supported by Singapore Unbound.
