Pathway to Abstraction

December 17, 2013 – January 9, 2014
11 – 6PM

Chelsea’s Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Japanese artistLeo Komuro in Pathway to Abstraction. The exhibition is scheduled to run from December 17, 2013 through January 9, 2014. The opening reception will be held on Thursday night, December 19, 2013 from 6-8 pm.

About the Artist

Leo Komuro’s charming works of acrylic and colored pencil on paper and digital C prints explore the border territory where the basic use of crayons, pencil and drawing meet the digital age. Working in both mediums – sometimes within the same composition - each piece alludes on its own terms to the conditions of contemporary art making. Classically speaking, light, shadow and a robust palette characterize the works. Having been partially paralyzed by a rare disease called Epidermolysis Bullos, the poignant and unique creations that Komuros produces are influenced by his condition and speak the expressive language of his fight to express himself through art. In some works we see a wealth of detail, together with a precise use of compositional space, while other works convey a clear, open and abstract vision. Insects, shellfish and bone scanning are reoccurring motifs on canvas.

Japanese artist Leo Komuro lives and works in Tokyo. He has shown extensively in New York and Tokyo, including at an exhibition at the Setagaya Art Museum Tokyo in 2003.

About the Exhibition

Through the artwork of Sensorial Realms the audience is reminded of the unending power of curiosity to illuminate aspects of both ourselves and our lives. The creations resonate on a visual, mental and emotional level, touching the audience in multiple and manifold ways. The artists whose works appear in Pathway to Abstraction present their individual perspectives in entertaining and energetic pieces whose considerable appeal lies in their ability to shed new light on old mysteries while leaving new secrets tantalizingly hidden. The works in The Odyssey Within display a degree of enlightened introspection that is both rare and intensely alluring. Combined with a perceptive view of the world, the result is a collection of unforgettable and enduring art.
