Music From China presents the 28th season of contemporary Chinese music featuring premieres of commissioned works and other compositions for Chinese and Western instruments. Program: JOEL HOFFMAN: huǒ shénhuà/Fire Myth* (world premiere) for dizi, pipa, erhu, cello, vibraphone – reflection of fire from the five elements of traditional Chinese philosophy; ZHOU LONG: Pipagongs* for pipa, erhu, cello, percussion – contemplation on the performing force of Beijing Opera gong and drum tradition; WANG GUOWEI: Leaving Home* for piccolo, erhu, cello – inspired by folk song of northwestern China; SHEN YIWEN: Yong (U.S. premiere) for solo pipa – study on Qin dynasty terra-cotta soldiers
