MOON & STARS in the Desert
Opening Reception: February 6, 4-7pm
Moon & Stars in the Desert showcases the individuality, creativity and cultural diversity of Femme Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Artists of California. The series started in 2023 to celebrate the annual National AAPI Heritage Month and also as a response to anti-Asian hate crimes that had risen across the country during the pandemic.
In 2024, curator Sung-Hee Son refined the theme to focus exclusively on the art of Femme AAPI artists. The shift represented the first-of-its-kind, an initiative highlighting the individuality, diverse heritage and chosen cultural expressions of those who have been historically under-represented, as well as often mis-represented in the Art World and society art large.
This groundbreaking exhibition challenges stereotypes and celebrates artistic innovations of 20 accomplished and emerging artists whose practices span a wide spectrum of contemporary themes and mediums.
The Artists: Amelie Laurice, Amy Inouye, Amy Lyu, Chun Son, Flora Kao, Ibuki Kuramochi, Kristen Liu-Wong, Kyongboon Oh, Lauren YS, Lili Miura, Mary Lai, Sasinum Zohm, Shizuko Greenblatt, Sijia Chen, Sung-Hee Son, Suwichada Busamrong-Press, Ting Yang Han, Yoon Chang, Yoshie Sakai and Yumiko Glover.
